I haven't looked at the code yet, but I've used the code from this branch
for some cluster experiments I did today and everything seems to work.
So at least for my tests, the change didn't break anything.
I didn't try to trigger transport failures, so I can not tell if the change
is really improving the error handling, still I would vote to merge it to get
some testing exposure.
