As far as I can tell, this PR is not perfect but it is nevertheless an
improvement. Do agree, [~vladimirsitnikov]?
I know how painful it can be to have large PR open for several months. So I
think we should commit it.
Many of the problems regarding logical and physical types are my fault. If we
can at least write them down here then we can solve them in future work.
