you post this without recognizing that Perl and Ruby already have this
for many
years.
I think Johannes recognises that, but considers it a poor design choice
on the part of those languages.
Perl has a reputation as a rather cryptic, "write only" language, best
suited to short, throw-away scripts, and cryptically named magic
variables like this are a big part of that.
