Show me developer that expects core engine functions to go away and be replaced with functions with almost the same, but slightly different output - and I show you a developer that has way too much free time on their hands. Most developers don't have time for such things. Yes, if we designed this function from scratch, knowing all we know now, we'd take different decisions.
