I think 5.6 should not be extended. It should be treated like any other release and given the same length of time originally planned for any previous release. It should not be the responsibility of PHP Development to be used as an excuse not to update adapt to newer code standards. Which is something I feel happens all to often not just with PHP in general, but regarding technology as a whole.
The PHP Development Team has done a wonderful job with PHP 7.0 and now the responsibility falls upon others to adapt to that new standard. Of course 5.6 will continue to receive the normal level support as previous releases, but it should not be extended simply because others choose to drag their feet.
