Sorry for the late late reply! First of all, I took a close look at usage, I could not find any recent and update to date projects using it, in fact in those cases, most were using FreeType2 if they in fact were using GD at all. The latest release of the library is indeed about 8 years or so ago and I did remember the issues we had with mcrypt when we were discussing about removing extensions earlier this year. I did however not find any strong evidence that the PostScript type 1 fonts are that strong in use in todays environments (yes we can argue about legacy systems endlessly), and even Adobe recommeds to avoid using them and instead suggests to use newer formats, such as OpenType fonts which we already support in GD.
