So why don't you just use reddit or hacker news instead of trying to create yet another community? When you get an overwhelming influx of upvotes from the random assortment of people there, you can bring your idea to the mailing list. Actually someone did that recently, regarding removing $ from variables. They got shot down pretty quickly. Personally I think having a forum would further lower the quality of discussion, as it would attract drive-by discussions on totally inane subjects.
