I think this has been done before and most who stay and contribute over
time have come here by their own means.

I agree, I really think that if PHP had a clear vision it would attract
scientists and engineers. I know C, I rarely get time to do much open
source these days, however, if I was excited by a clear and exciting
road map I'd be more inclined to make time for PHP rather than attempt
to get to grips with things like WebKit internals, which seem much more
appealing and certainly have a clear and exciting future. Contributing
to PHP internals does not look totally appealing at this point and kudos
to those that give up their time to do so.
