On Windows (where I generally do most of my scripting grunt work), I typically use Notepad++ and it highlights<?php just fine.
Sometimes you get an alert and have to debug foreign code in situ. Then this <?= is a little bugger because under pressure, you don't expect and echo where there is none written. I could live with removing it at a sane point in time.
Given, I only see <?= in template code nowadays and according to our house rules, it's forbidden for anything new.
