SLES, ...) where the vendor will take care of backporting PHP fixes.

SLES 11 SP2 got out this week, finally shipping PHP 5.3 for the first time. They did a pretty good job maintaining their 5.2 product (which is still included as an unsupported option). Enterprise distributions are both slow and stable.

I don't think php development should commit to unpaid long term support.
