This way we can see that you are both willing and able to contribute to the php-src. Usually after a few patches, someone will ask you to fill out the form at http://php.net/svn-php.php <http://hu2.php.net/svn-php.php> and you get your shiny php.net account with the appropriate karma to commit your fixes in the future.
