I think you could make this work for 5.3, if it used the old "zend_bool array_type_hint". A zend_bool is 8 bits, so that's plenty. It would be a little bit messy, but I'm fairly confident it could be made work.
Unless the particular module would interpret everything that has non-zero array_type_hint as being typehinted to array, as it is now in 5.3.0.
