As far as I know, Jani is referring to PHP6 only. And it was "decided" in the "php6 notes". I'm in favour to remove ereg in php6, and the sooner we decide the better.Users will know about this change and will finally understand the PCRE superiority and why they should use it instead, and today. As of 5.x (5.2.x or 5.3.x), I rather prefer to deprecate it in 5.3 (if any) but I don't think we should remove it in 5.x.
