Get the world to update to 5.2, and all is good...
That seems unlikely to happen in the immediate future, afaics, no
matter how much we might wish it did.
This is true.
RHEL 5 just came out in March with PHP 5.1.6. They appear to be on a 3
year release cycle. Just try getting support from a host (like
Rackspace) if you upgrade PHP on your server. They will not help you at
all and blame your custom build for your problems. So, many non-geek
small business web site owners are stuck with the version that came with
their distro for years or having to have some part time sys admin hack
up their server.
RHEL 4 has PHP 4.3.9. I expect it to still be in wide use for at least
another 3 years given that brand new servers were just deployed with it
in the last few months.
Phorum is still tied to 4.3.9 because of RHEL 4 and hosts like
Rackspace. Sure, at dealnews, we are running 5.2.1. We can do that, we
run our own servers. But the masses, that install things like Phorum,
Gallery, Drupal, etc. don't have that luxury.
But, it sounds like there may be hope for some logical dealing with this
issue by converting the types under the covers so that users don't have
to deal with these issues.
I had been joking with the Phorum team that we would rewrite Phorum 6 to
work only with PHP6. I am starting to worry that my jokes will become
reality.
