why even bother with self:: ? you could just as well use the class name.
its just syntactical sugar .. however late static binding actually gives
you a useful feature (well one could argue that self:: atleast gives you
the option of getting the same feature through cut and paste).
and of course i was not argueing in favor of a BC break ..
