How long PHP must take care of old, very old scripts?!
'For as long as they're in widespread use' sounds about right, as long as
it doesn't significantly impair new applications. Many of the points on
Rasmus' list were cleanups that won't significantly change the lives of
developers who want to write new apps, but will just make the lives of
legacy app maintainers more difficult. Almost by definition they fall into
the category of nice to haves.
That said, with a proper workaround for legacy apps, it's conceivable.
