We did, but we never arrived at consensus. I don't really see a good reason for giving people access to code-units with such a low-level operator. If we fix it, I'd rather fix it so that [] only works on arrays, and {} on strings, with some sort of BC switch.

No, it doesn't. That's one of the thorny unresolved issues.
