This is a very good, point we really should drop support for things like
gd1 (no reason anymore, latest versions (including bundled) have GIF
support). These only add a hundreds of ifdefs to the code or prevent
usage of new(er) functionality.

IMHO we should see what is the lowest possible version of a lib
distributed by commonly used distro and upgrade our requirements to @
least that version.
