I couldn't agree more, Wez - but this is the problem I'm seeing.  What
chance is there of working it out together when all discussion on the topic
has been effectively overruled?  If this ever gets to be the standard
approach to PHP development, we'll have utter chaos.

The last word on the subject, prior to the #ifdef'd commit, was that the
date talks should be revisited after the 5.1 release.

Meantime, the only thing that should be happening is that the existing
implementation in the core, which _will_ be part of 5.1.0, is thoroughly
tested, debugged, and made as stable as possible, as quickly as possible.
That would be in everyone's interests, and I'd hope all factions can agree
on that at least.
