I'm sorry, you're right and we're all wrong. All of us. We, the stupid core developers of PHP, have been, for more than 2 years off-and-on, discussing the wrong solution to the problem. How could we be so blind? Aren't we dumb? We are mistaken that the C code is inconsistent and needs fixing. We're wrong to want to make it better. We're wrong to also want to make it more uniform.
