It is time to forget BC with PHP 3. Nearly noone is using it now.

It's not only BC. An empty variable == NULL and there are some other good situations (which I can't remember on the top of my head) where this needs to stay the way it is.
It really doesn't matter and I suggest not to break such stuff because it could break millions of scripts.
