Except for it pushing PHP in Perl's direction of being unreadable it doesn't really give any added value. I don't see how it is a significant improvement over using a function such as preg_match(). (Actually I think the latter is more readable).
Here's a small quote from Mr. Ritchie:

I think Perl is a prime example of why the quote is correct.
