Ah, you are right.  I had the wrong person confused.

No changes were made actually.  A symlink was created in
php-src/ext/sqlite which pointed to pecl/sqlite.  That was it.  But that
of course meant that a co -r PHP_4_3 php-src would also check out
pecl/sqlite which caused the confusion.
