$ xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1680x1050 Will set the display mode properly, but the gnome menu bar (normally on the bottom) appears in the middle of the screen and logging of reverts back
This is a gnome thing, then. Try switching off VGA completly, gnome might then adopt to the higher resolution.
