I think we still dither down to 8 for HDMI sinks, since they generally only report 8bpc or 12bpc. So unless you want to add 12bpc support (mostly mechanical as far as the kernel goes) you'll be stuck with 8bpc on HDMI. -- Jesse Barnes, Intel Open Source Technology Center
