Hi,

The -02 revision is mostly the result of changing over to the current IETF
XML tool chain for documents. It has lots of insignificant changes from -01.

The -03 revision has changes intended to respond to the the suggestions
from the IEEE 802.1 WG (see
https://www.ietf.org/lib/dt/documents/LIAISON/liaison-2023-03-20-ieee-802-1-int-liaison-on-ietf-rfc-7042bis-iana-considerations-and-ietf-protocol-and-documentation-usage-for-ieee-802-parameters-attachment-1.pdf
).

The reason for doing this in two stages is that if you compared -03 with
-01 you would see the changes to resolve the 802.1 suggestions intermingled
with all the conversion to XML artifacts. By comparing -03 to -02, you
mostly get the changes to resolve the 802.1 suggestions and some other
minor improvements.

IEEE 802.1 suggestions not addressed in -03 are as follows:

1. The IESG Statement in Appendix B.
IEEE 802.1 suggestions: Change "Ethertype" to "EtherType" and replace the
reference to IEEE Std 802.1a-2003 with a reference to IEEE Std 802.1-2014.
Since this is an IESG Statement, the IESG has to do this.

2. IEEE 802.1 suggested that the dates be removed from some references to
their documents.
2.a: This is not up to the INTAREA WG or the IETF. The style of references
in RFCs is under the control of the RFC Editor, a separate function that
predates the IETF.
2.b: This matter has come up between the RFC Editor and IEEE 802 before and
the RFC Editor has thus far decided to include the dates.
2.c: I believe that the dates of these references should be retained. IEEE
802.1 standards documents are revised and amended over the years. Readers
should be put on notice when a document references a more recent version
than they have or when it was based on an older version than they have.

Of course, something may have been missed or screwed up or you might
disagree with some of the changes.

Thanks,
Donald
