Thanks for the suggestion.
In fact cyrus is allowed to send and the command in imapd.conf points to an executable that is still present.

However, FreeBSD 14 removed sendmail and replaced it with DMA.
DMA works from the command line, but is apparently incompatible with Cyrus, even if the binary is still called "sendmail".
Installing the real Sendmail solved.
