Thank you, Bartosz.  In fact, I had seen that link before (maybe from
Sacha Chua Emacs News?).  But it didn't really help.  Looks like dovecot's
'imap' binary now expects to be able to always perform authentication,
even when it's called as I used to (i.e. as a 'nnimap-shell-program').
This means that I would need to have the server fully configured and
running to allow me to authenticate with it.  At least this was my
understanding, but I may be wrong, as I didn't really got to the bottom of
it.

I just gave up on trying to use dovecot.  I may revisit that decision at
some point but I don't see that happening in the short term as I'm still
able to use Gnus for email and there are way more interesting things to
learn :-)
