Thunderbird, for e.g., did not handle maildirs well last time I checked;
in that case you might be better off making it do the checking and using
Gnus to read its mbox store. Outlook IIUC uses pst which can be read
directly. So I guess it depends on the client (I don't see why it could
be anything else that might be used out of compulsion over Gnus ;-) ).
