The naming is built on the original protocol, nntp: Network News Transfer Protocol. As Gnus grew the ability to speak more protocols, they all got the same nn* prefix. I actually find it sort of handy for distinguishing discussions about IMAP or maildir from the Gnus backends, but I agree there shouldn't be any need for nnnil.
