I reported this same problem a few months back. However, without any changes to my configuration, I've just noticed things are now working correctly and I don't need to do M-g anymore. My problems started when my ISp changed news server software. I don't know if they have changed something else or if they have just changed some configuration, but now things do appear to be working fine. I did notice the problem only with gnus - things worked fine with tin.
