What is GNU Chess? GNU Chess is a free chess-playing program developed as part of the GNU project of the Free Software Foundation.
Although GNU Chess can be used as a chess program it is typically used in association with a separate graphical front end such as the Xboard program. GNU Chess is written in C and should be portable to most general purpose computers. What is new in GNU Chess 5.08? - GNU Chess is now distributed under GNU GPLv3 - bug fixes including GCCv4 compilation - added memory command The fixes include improvements and simplifications of the programs positional evaluation function. As a result of these fixes this is the strongest version of GNU Chess 5 to date. Most of the remaining changes are designed to ensure that GNU Chess can more easily be used by third party tools, such as in automated competitions between chess engines. GNU Chess 5 is no longer being actively developed, Antonio Ceballos is working on GNU Chess 6 which is based on the Fruit Engine by Fabien Letouzey and some GNU Chess 5 code, with the intent of producing a stronger engine, which supports Winboard and UCI protocol, and provides good backward compatibility.
