GVPE, the GNU Virtual Private Ethernet daemon, version 1.9, has just been release.
As this is the first release announced on this list, I'll summarize the programs features only. Details about the changes in this and earlier releases can be found in the NEWS file, e.g. at: http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/gvpe/gvpe/NEWS?rev=HEAD GVPE creates a virtual ethernet (broadcasts supported, any protocol that works with a normal ethernet should work with GVPE) by creating encrypted host-to-host tunnels between multiple endpoints. Unlike other virtual private "network" solutions which merely create a single tunnel, GVPE creates a real network with multiple endpoints and manages these tunnels automatically. It is designed to be very simple and robust (cipher selection done at compiletime etc.), and easy to setup (only a single config file that can be shared unmodified between all hosts, together with public key pairs). Vpn hosts can neither sniff nor fake packets, that is, you can use MAC-based filtering to ensure authenticity of packets even from member nodes. GVPE can also be used to tunnel into some private network using a variety of protocols (raw IP, UDP, TCP, HTTPS-proxy-connect, ICMP and DNS). It is, however, primarily designed to sit on the gateway machines of company branches (or similar) to connect them together. -- The choice of a -----==- _GNU_ ----==-- _ generation Marc Lehmann ---==---(_)__ __ ____ __ [EMAIL PROTECTED] --==---/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / http://schmorp.de/ -=====/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ XX11-RIPE _______________________________________________ GNU Announcement mailing list <info-gnu@gnu.org> http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-gnu
