I downloaded & compiled because one post said that LOGIN & PLAIN were required to make IMAP work and I did not see tham listed by imtest utility.
Not true. FC3 RPMs work out of the box. If I remember correctly, by default it will use saslauthd (which is usually setup to use /etc/shadow) for authentication.
BTW, you passed wrong option to imtest. It is not -m username. It is -a username:
imtest -v -a username localhost
