A server running cyrus imap 1.6.20 (and sasl 1.5.13) has been functioning well for
over a year. In order to allow use of Outlook Express 5.0 as a client I've configured
for login capability and plaintext passwords.

When OE starts to look for this (default) server, there is an annoying 60+ second
delay and server response timeout error. Subsequent actions seem to have no difficulty
finding and communicating with the server. Eudora clients have no such problems using
CRAM-MD5 auth, but suffer from other stability problems on some machines where OE is
otherwise stable.

Yesterday was spent searching the archives and every nook and cranny on the web,
re-reading all the docs for imap and sasl, and I am unfortunately no closer to a
solution. I'm starting to believe this is simply a client issue, the server is not
having difficulty with login when using imtest.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated, even if only to point me to other resources
I might have missed or been unaware of. I'm hoping someone on the list has had a
similar experience and can share how it was resolved.

Many thanks,
