This is really good question which has its roots into the purposeof OpenSolaris project and its future. I see OpenSolaris as angreat OS for development of various scientific-oriented softwareand any application that could make life easier to scientistsshould be ported on OpenSolaris. One of very important part writingsome software is writing its documentation, or writing scientificpaper where we'd put results of our research. It is the pointwhere we need as much high quality fonts as possible. Of course, anyone could go to Adobe web site and buy some font, but I believethat scientific community should have some reasonably large baseof high quality free fonts. We have TeX/LaTex for typesetting withits Computer Modern font but this font is 25+ years old - we needfresh ones that could fit even better into calligraphic standardsof 21st century. Having this in my mind, I pledge that this and many others highquality free fonts should be included and maintained as a separatepackage. This is one of areas where we, as a community could doour job. Of course, there are other OpenSolaris users, like people leveragingZFS for storage purposes or for OS running some critical industrialstrength application for years. They could just exclude all thosepackages and GNOME DE, as well. Some text-oriented shell would beenough for administrators.
