No, you've done nothing wrong. The owners of blastwave and sunfreeware
have not updated their depot server in quite some time and support for
version 0 of search was removed from the client on July 1st (changeset
1191).
I don't have explanations for your other issues. One thing you might try is:
pkg search -s https://pkg.sun.com/opensolaris/extra/ virtualbox
and see if search will work the extra repository until the fix for 12739
gets back.
