I still find that most fonts look blocky and gross with Hinting set to "Full", and they look the best and most smooth with Hinting set to "None". This seems very strange. Additionally, I agree that the fonts in firefox are quite weird. As an ironic example, see the code-review for the fix to 6904057: http://cr.opensolaris.org/~steleman/6904057/ Clock on the Sdiff for open-src/lib/fontconfig/49-sun-preuser.conf. The capital W's look like smudges. One hint of what might be wrong is that the Gnome font preferences don't seem to be affecting firefox at all. For example, the Hinting settings I change through Gnome Fonts preferences panel affect gnome-terminal's and other Gnome applications, but not firefox.
