This problem is very common in Linux. In order to properly wake up after sleep, ALL your hardware must be compatible. If your computer won't wake up during the first couple of trials, then there is, of course, no reason to suspend it. The warning is just that. Make sure you close all your applications and save all your work before you try to put your notebook to the suspend mode for the first time. If it doesn't wake up, it means that your notebook is not ready for the suspend to RAM, yet.
