Friend of mine recently set up OpenSolaris and sent me the following feedback,
which I thought others might be interested in. -alan
============
I installed VirtualBox today on my Linux system at home, and Just installed
OpenSolaris 200805 in it. Pretty impressed, it all went pretty smoothly. The
LiveCD is great, very Ubuntu-like. I never even had to burn a physical DVD,
VirtualBox was able to run right from the ISO image that I pulled from the net,
and then I installed onto my (virtual) harddrive directly from the ISO.

A couple of things, and you've probably heard them before, but they seem to be
fit-n-finish things that could really help:

- the darn Solaris installs with the hosts name service set to "files". DHCP
seemed to work fine, got an address from my DSL router (the DHCP server), my
system was on the internet, but there was no name service. That's just silly.
So I had to go and copy the /etc/resolv.conf file from my Linux box, and then
copy /etc/nsswitch.dns ot /etc/nsswitch.conf. Trivial for somebody who has
been using Unix for a long time. A newbie is just going to wonder why their
web browser isn't working.

- So once I got my browser working I googled for "coolstack" and went to the
Sun download center to grab the LAMP stack (er, Solaris AMP stack) to install.
The cool Sun Download Manager is a Java WebStart (jnlp) file. And the Firefox
that was bundled and installed on my OpenSolaris box didn't know what to do
with it. Fortunately I knew I could save it to a file, and then run it from
the command line via "/usr/bin/javaws <foo>.jnlp", but that's another one that
I would think should "just work".

But those gripes aside, this is pretty cool. I just grabbed the pieces
individually -- first VirtualBox, then the OpenSolaris ISO. And for a somewhat
experience user, it's pretty easy. I think the OpenSolaris install compared
very favorably to my experience with Ubuntu 8.04.
