in short: the advantage of having dedicated GRUB partition is to leave to any OS installed on your machine to update its own boot environment (like changes in menu.lst file for example)
I am simply (in my main/starting menu.lst which is on my dedicated GRUB partition) chainloading any OS' own bootloader and rely on it for booting environment which may freqently change in such distros like Ubuntu (new kernel and initrd)
