in short:

the advantage of having dedicated GRUB partition is to leave to any OS
installed on your machine to update its own boot environment (like changes
in menu.lst file for example)

I am simply (in my main/starting menu.lst which is on my dedicated GRUB
partition) chainloading  any OS' own bootloader and rely on it for booting
environment which may freqently change in such distros like Ubuntu (new
kernel and initrd)
