I think what you are asking for is - can the zfs root be a compressed 
dataset.  There is no elegant way to do it at this point.  We had 
thought of including this option at one point but it got dropped.  A 
hacky way is to set compression manually.  You can do this while the 
transfer is going on.  Once set, all subsequent transfers will be 
compressed.
