I don't know what the fascination is with pidgin but, if you want the latest version you *can* get pidgin-2.4.3 from Blastwave. I have run it today and, yes it works but doesn't do anything particularly fascinating. Isn't just IRC enough for people? What is this thing with pidgin? Am I missing the point or what?
