Sorry for a false alarm.  When I changed from "copy" to "soft link", java seems 
to enabled (I am running FF3).  I.e.,

pfexec cp /usr/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so 
/opt/sfw/lib/firefox/plugin/  -- java not enabled

pfexec ln -s /usr/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so 
/opt/sfw/lib/firefox/plugin/  -- java enabled

Really couldn't explain why.  I checked my bash history, those were the 
commands I entered.  :-(
