Forgot to mention that the 新酷音輸入法 (Chewing Input Method Engine) in Solaris can be configured so that it works very similar to UIM-pinyin-big5. The only thing one needs to do is to set the keyboard preference to Hanyu Pinyin keyboard (漢語拼音鍵盤). The Chewing method was originally developed on the JDS-Solaris platform.
