Of course the activesync is then failing to sync anymore.
It seems that it's not enough to disable the sms sync feature
on the phone end & removing of the sms-mails from the phone.

Can this be resolved without resetting the activesync data ?

That should never make it to the imap server, something odd is going on. I'll take a look, but have had no trouble on my Note 3.

Fixed in Horde_ActiveSync 2.17.7. Unfortunately it will only prevent this going forward, you will have to reset the sync state for any affected devices.
