Probably not. You would need to create a new theme, since I
believe all existing files are overwritten when upgrading via PEAR.
FWIW, that icon is from the Silk Icons set used for all the other
icons in the silver theme
(http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/). If you want to suggest
another icon to use, we would listen to all suggestions.

So, it looks like it is using the user_red icon (hence the pink), perhaps it
could be changed to just the user icon. Same icon, just with a blue shirt or
maybe user_gray?
I went with the basic user.png icon (blue shirt), over Simon's
suggestion of status_online, since it most closely matches the
color/graphics used for the mailing list message icon.
