Edit imp/config/prefs.php. Look for the section that begins with:

Thanks! Done that, the Fetch Mail icon disappeared, but one still
can go to Options / Fetch Mail / "Edit your preferences for
accessing other mail accounts." and setup an account. However, the
"chmod 000" solution works quite well, if one can explain the plain
white pages :)
No need to chmod anything. Just remove the Fetch Mail menu entry from
your prefs.php file ($prefGroups['fetchmail'] entry).
