applications. redhat 7.1 is pretty old, and many vulnerabilities must be
there which can be exploited by the worms yu've mentioned. worms enter
your system through the security holes in applications, thus it is
always recommended to run minimum required applications, and that too
protect them using firewall from outside access.
as for the antivirus, antivirus softwares are available, but they'd not
help much. afaik, they're basically to be used by mail applications so
that incoming mails can be scanned before being transferred to windows
machines.
