Dear Friends, Linux is an excellent platform, so say we; but a very large number of people state lack of support as the biggest hurdle in use/migration to Linux. This is exactly what Karnataka IT Sec told their govt in support of M$.
I also know that most of the professional Li service providers have some reservations about the way their business is doing; since their aren't very many users (of commercial variety). So this is a chicken and egg story. There aren't enough users because prospective users cant find enough support on Li and will not risk moving their businesses to a platform without known and visible support; conversely, the Li service providers dont have roaring businesses because there arent sufficient number of users. I want to (atleast) let the user community know that that support on Li is a reality (please do not mention support from this list, since Win type users do not have the habit of this kind of support and this list support is utilisable by techys, not business users/SMEs or SOHO). I want to know if any of you or your friends provide commercial/non-commercial Linux based services either in personal capacity or as an organisation. You may please pass on this mail to your friends. This database shall be used purely for letting prospective users know that professional help is available just a phone call/email away. The services could be : (i) Installation and commissioning of desktop and desktop apps. (ii) Installation and commissioning server (including clusters) and web/mail/proxy firewall/fax gateways etc. (iii) System integration over heterogeneous network. (iv) System admin. (v) Migration services. (vi) DBA, installation of databases Oracle/PostgreSQL/SAPDB/MySQL/MSQL etc and applications. (vii) Software development (please specify your areas of expertise : business domain and platform) and software customisation. (viii) Facility Management/ AMC. (ix) Network admin, Network management. (x) Data recovery. (xi) Any other specialised services viz CTI etc. (xii) Security data, network, desktop. (xiii) Training (please mention the type of training/service). (xiv) Sale of Li preloaded PCs/servers. Please provide : (i) Your name/contact person's name. (ii) Organisation (if any). (iii) Contact address, phones, emails and website. (iv) Types of services and if they are commercial or not. (v) For how long have you/org been providing these services. (vi) Description of demo setup (if any). (vii) Any associates across India. (viii) Any apprehensions/reservations. Though I'll keep a copy (sorry, I am not too proficient in programming. The DB will be on a spreadsheet), I'll request LFY to publish it in pieces (and LFY also request service providers to send in their details) and ilugd to publish on the website for the benefit of prospective users and Li business community.
